I think FIRST is too smart. They probably don't do anything in game design on paper and shred what they do, plus the GDC is kind of scattered, so it's harder to find the game.

Actually the "leaked" game was a hoax. But a very good one that in some ways was close to the real game that year. Inspectors and Refs were still trying to correct misconceptions at Nationals that were brought on by the hoax. Lots of showing people things in the rule books. Pdfs were either just coming into fashion or not invented yet so everything was on paper and teams didn't always print complete rules for everybody either. That did not help things.
I won't mention the name of the prominent FIRSTer who pulled this one. Their very prominence gave the story credibility it would not have had otherwise which contributed to the damage. The perpitrator apologized and swore never to do such a thing again, and they haven't. So we just remember it and tell the story every now and then as a caution not to believe everything you read on CD. I think it was around then that CD added the Rumor Mill.
BTW never EVER believe what you read in the Rumor Mill. That area of CD is strictly for amusement.
