Yes, you can use the Java applet to capture and view frames.
It's serviceable for focusing and even basic calibration.

Labview can do the same and A LOT more. Even though I am not a fan of huge amounts of disk space, memory either.

Yes, you will need a USB-SERIAL adapter. There are plenty of threads here you can search for suggestions as to which you might use and why.
