This is only speculation, but it would make the most sense as a way to interact with either the field or the other robots on the field.

They could use it as an analog to the light, so you'd be able to tell whether a robot is on the same alliance or not. The extra connector might be for a transmitter board.

The other option, and probably more likely, is to revisit the IR beacons from a few years ago in a more user friendly way. The connector may provide more IR inputs besides the default one on the board.

On a robot now you can use it to triangulate your position based on two beacons by sweeping it back and forth and tracking the angles where you see the beacons.
