I totally agree. This sort of thing abounds in high school. I've found that a well-set goal is one that can be achieved or failed by you alone. I try not to worry about grades, but about learning. And the same with FIRST, I don't think it's possible to realize the purpose of FIRST until you've set a goal that is won or lost before any competition begins. :-Dan

: When I was in high school, I played in my high school jazz band. We had a great band. We won a lot of awards and we also lost a lot of awards that we thought we deserved. A lot of times we would hear who won an award and we thought it was a joke, that they didn't deserve it, we deserved it more, etc. etc.

: I began to think that when we won awards, there were surely other bands that felt that we didn't deserve it, that they deserved it more, etc. etc.

: I then realized that any competition in which the winners are picked by judging is not worth getting all that worked up about. The reason is because the judging is very subjective. It depends on who's judging, their background, experiences, expectations, and even their mood at the time. I began to realize that usually there are many groups that deserve to win and who wins among those groups is very subjective. The team that won should still be proud, since winning means you were in that group that deserved to win. However, the winners should also realize that there were others that may have also deserved to win.

: In summary, try not to get too worked up about judged competitions. The winners of these competitions depend about as much on the judges as they do on the entries. If you don't win, don't worry too much about it. Take pride in you work when you show it off to people and that is a plenty big reward.

: -Chris
