The definition of hurdled says it has to touch the ground or another robot after crossing but before RE-contacting your robot. I think that implies that you've released the ball before it crosses. It's not in the rules if you're being 100% lawyerly-literal about them, but I'm pretty sure the point it the you're given up control of the trackball in order to hurdle it.
