Have you seen tapes of the previous competitions? Our rookie year we found referencing to the tapes a great help( after getting over the shock of who and what was competing)
Also, GET SOMETHING RUNNING! We made a square frame with a Sheppard casters in the back and drill motors driving the front wheels with jury rigged chain drives. We clamped on a plywood deck to hold controls and weights and were running in a few days. This will allow you to become more familier with controls, drives, and, most important, start driver training. After your rookie year you throw the controls on last years machine and start practicing the first day.
