why dont you try a sphere with self-illumination turn all the way up and then put a fall off in the opacity map parameters. If you are trying for a sun-glowyish thingy.

Another way to do glows, is to render out a completely white sphere with self-illumination turn all the way up in the place where you want the glow. render the sphere out as separate layer and take that layer in to Combustion and then blur the layer, change the color of the layer and viola! a glowy layer without your computer spending time rendering the glow frame by frame.
