: Perhaps there is a LAN supplier who would donate the use of a server, and any team that wanted to could buy the equipment needed to wirelessly connect to the server.

: Is something like this realistic? Does anyone know of a specific system we could use?

At the home improvement store I used to work at, when they updated our register/computer system, they used, in many cases, a wireless LAN system to connect the department computers to the server. While I am not sure of the name or cost of this system, I will find out what I can the next time I am home. Of course, the question is, what is the range, how much traffic could it support, and would it interfere with the control systems? I'll find out what I can then let everybody know...
