just to be clear (cause i don't total understand why this was put in thread to my message).. i'm not a team 'captain'.. i'm actually a college student mentoring some high school kids.. we'd be closer (and for my team basically serve in) to engineer's role rather than a high school student captain..
as for my opinion on it.. it's slightly mixed.. i think that each year, on every team, there's a couple of students who 'rise to the top' in terms of their effort and work... they simply are on a different level of involvement than other students.. and it is natural that those students would become the captains... and because those students are naturally at the forefront, i see no real need to specially name anyone 'captain'... because sometimes that does make others feel that their work isn't noticed or appreciated in comparison to the captain's...
however, i feel in making team decisions.. if they fully aren't made by students, students should at least be allowed representation in matters... and that's the only place i see there as being a need for a captain...
