In my opinion, I like neither the round balls or the footballs. The round balls are too predictable while the footballs 'roll' in complete chaos-not to mention hard to pick up in masses. So here are two ideas I've thought of.
1. Instead of using footballs FIRST should use Rugby balls. Rugby balls are still oblong like a footballs so they'll have that unpredictable quality but still be predectable enough to catch them.
2. Place a small amount of water inside the round balls. Those who have been to Epcot know of the huge Balzak balls they sell. My idea would be similar but the balls would be more robust. With the water the balls wouln't bounch as good, will bounch in odd directions, and have quivering quality to them. They would also be challenging to move because of the water within. (try holding a ball filled with some water over your head with one hand!!)
Those are my solutions. I'm trying to think of more.
Happy brainstorming.
