Actually that isn't quite true. Sundial can run connected to the Field Management System, in which case it automatically picks up the start of a match. It can also run without being connected, but the match starts and team pairings have to be input manually.

FTAs were asked not to allow Sundial to be connected to the network that runs the FMS. If some team wants to set up their own wireless network for other teams to use and input the match schedules themselves, that is OK.

The concern was for potential interference between Sundial and the FMS and lack of time/resources to verify compatibility. FMS is hard wired so wireless networks nearby should not be an issue.

In Los Angeles Team 1138 was running Sundial on a local wireless network. I had Sundial displayed on an isolated laptop on the Scoring table to help with time management. It helped the Announcer to see how far off we were and to predict an end time to help with other festivities, alliance picking, etc.
