To answer the crystal question. The total set of Vex Crystals (publicly available and competition set) is 30. 20 are part of the competition set. FIRST does own multiple crystals sets but the crystal process (being shaken down at NYC this weekend) will still be the bottleneck.

Experience shows that the publically available crystals really cannot be used because there is too much chance of interference when someone turns on a robot somewhere else with that crystal. For the same reason, I'd expect the teams will only receive the transmitter crystals at the last moment so that it is not possible to transmit on the competition frequencies accidentally. Unfortunately this is what we believe caused issues last year. No intentional malice on the teams part, but robots being turned on with crystals that were in use disrupting the templates and causing problems on the field. The goal is to minimize that this year.
