Your phone doesn't neeed the intenet. Every phone has an e-mail address through which text messages are sent/recieved - regardless if you have internet on your phone or not.
On on the wiki page, there are lists of service providers' e-mail formats.
I for example have t-mobile which would leave the e-mail i enter as:
1234567890@tmomail.net (where the 123ect is, I would enter my number, obviously
)
