Portable 12V Power Supplies?

One of the good things of using the 12V drill batteries is that we were never short of portable power supplies. Each year, we'd cut off the drill handles, attach a set of leads, and voila you have a great, rechargeable power supply to use for prototypes or single motor fine-tuning. Over the years, I've noticed our team's stock pile slowly diminish as the power supplies would be misplaced, coupled with the fact that the more recent kits didn't include drill batteries/chargers.

So my question to the group here.... has anyone come up with a useful, affordable, and non-wasteful 12V portable power supply. I just can't accept the 'make it fit alternative' of buying a perfectly good drill and cutting it in half just to make a power supply. Hmm.... maybe a quick new product for Innovation FIRST to put on the market....
