They're are lots of cheap drill motors that would work great for this project and would require less modification than the NBDs.
Harbor Freight makes a cheap 18v drill that many battlebots builders have modified for drives over the years. They're very durable and only cost around $24.
The
RobotMarketPlace also stocks a large selection of quality drills. They've got trannys and drills for 12v, 14.4v, 18v, and 24v. All at reasonable prices.
If you're looking for ultra high quality (and don't mind spending the money) the best drill motors and mods can be purchased from
TeamDelta.
Depending on how intense "Skills Canada" is, BaneBots might be good enough. They really are cheap. But don't expect them to survive high current or a lot of shock.
