If you view Chief Delphi on high res monitors, and you maximize the window (most people, when using Windows, always do this), it becomes difficult to read things when they stretch to 30 or 40+ words per line. Most readability studies show that the "limit" for ease of readability should be a maximum of about 15 words per line.
So rather than force all the users to stop always maximizing their application windows, the default on the web page is set to 980px.
Also, I think Brandon also set the default page size to 980px, due to CD-Media acting weird if it was viewed smaller than 980px wide.
