Don't forget one of the most famous tread bot Johny 5.

That robot seemed to move pretty smoothly on a lot of different surface materials and surfaces. (Could be movie magic)

Essentially that machine was a 1/2 track with articulating treads and a rear caster wheel set. It may be worth reviewing those movies just to watch the tread motions and the machines manueverability.
