I doubt sand and boulders would be used - far too messy. But what if the playing field was somewhat hilly or bumpy or otherwise significantly non-flat, perhaps requiring an actual (gasp!) suspension for the wheels? That
would shake things up, and good.
So many teams have a standard drivetrain that they buy the materials for and, 3 days after kickoff, have built already, since it's the
umpteenth time they've made one like that.
