Back in May, I asked a question in regards to fasteners at the Team Forum.
Fasteners deal with 6 degrees of freedom (DOF). These are lateral movement in the X, Y, and Z directions, and rotation about the X,Y and Z directions.
For a robot wheel, the axle "fastens" the wheel to the robot by preventing movement up and down (Z axis) and fore and aft (Y axis), but not necessarily along the axle's axis which would be left and right (X axis).
Likewise, the wheel axle prevents rotation about Y and Z, and only permits rotation around the X axis.
FIRST had mentioned that any component which would be called a fastener under normal use is acceptable as a fastener. It does not matter HOW you are using it, but whether a "lay person" would call it.
If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it must be a duck.
