Kristi,
First off make sure you are applying the texture to the objects, if you did, and it still doesn't work, it is most likely something to do with your texture mapping. You have to adjust your UVW map (which is located on the right side of your screen as a modifier toolbar for the object) Depending on your object you can place and center the map. I highly suggest that you read heavily into the books given with 3DS Max about texture mapping, and run the tutorials involved.
