Brian. Do you have any toolmakers or machinests on your team, they would know how to retain a pin in a hole.
assuming you dont then you could use a hardened bolt with a lock nut on it if you have the room.
Drilling holes through a shaft tends to weaken the rod and braking of the shaft at the drill area is possible with the high pushing powers need for this years games.
A key way is the best way but must be done by a qualified person.
