I'd put my money on Woodrow as a full name, if Woodie is not it. Couple of possibilties for inspiration: Woodrow Wilson was president from 1912-1920. I think if he was named after anyone famous, though, Woody Guthrie may be more likely. He wrote "This Land is Your Land" in 1940, and was writing lots of popluar war-related music in the early 40's.

Or, maybe he had a grandmother named woodithiew.
