I think it's definitely true that when peolpe get together and think as a group and help each other out, the result is better than what could be achieved by any individual.
HOWEVER, I also believe that without a strong element of competition, there is little motivation for people to achieve anything. The largest reason that technology advances as fast as it does is because companies want to be the first to introduce new products so that customers will start to buy their product instead of the competitor's. When this happens, the competitors must respond and develop a new technology of their own. If all the companies split the profits equally, there would be very little motivation (other than, "wow, look what I did"

to develop new technologies.
Remember, the reason the U.S. pulled off the incredible feat of going to the moon in such a short time is due to competition from the Soviet Union. In general, there is no better motivator than stiff competition. I would personally like to see it come back to the game a little more.
