The traditional definition of a fastener has been "anything that holds two or more parts in fixed relation to each other". So if the parts don't rotate or slide in relation to each other it doesn't matter what holds them together. If they do whatever holds them together needs to be from a "legal" source.

Of course this is enforced by the judges and sometimes things slip through, so your mileage may vary. But following this rule is a pretty safe bet.
