I got the 255.0.0.0 from the manual, and it worked for our team. I can't say that 255.255.255.0 wouldn't work as I have not tried it, but we went by the configuration manual and it worked.
Another thing that I've seen mentioned on the FIRST forums if you are using a computer with more than one network connection, is to disable the all of the network cards except the wired one that is connected to the cRIO. Because during the upgrade process the IP is sometimes set to 0.0.0.0 and this can mess things up if you are connected to other networks at the same time.

I'm not sure why but I'm not able to set DNS to automatic. If you look at the image again you can see that I can't. I will try what you have suggested and change the subnet mask to 255.0.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 and check if that solves problem.
