I have a feeling that Russ is right with his "reversed power plus leakage" theory. Since adding the load of a servo kills the board entirely, you might have a very weak power path.

The BAT LED has an under-voltage detector. Since it is not on, it is indicating that it needs more voltage to properly run. Negative voltage also fails to turn on the LED.

I couldn't find your post on the usfirst.org site. Can you link?
