We did this last year with mixed results. We basically made an keyed aluminum cylinder that fit inside of the octagon. We then used a hose clamp to keep the plastic teeth tight around the aluminum cylinder.

If you want to see pictures, our gallery has many different pictures.

I would not suggest this approach for a drive system unless you have a more reliable way of connecting to the plastic octagon. A hose clamp eventually gets lose and then your shaft will be free-spinning.
