I understand your problem.. and THINK I have the general idea for a solution. If its to the left of your deadband and far away then it would set the motors to:

+1
-1

(go foreword)

+1 - .2 = (.8)
-1

(go foreword and turn to the left)

Reversed for the right. IDK! Just me thinking..
