The scholarship has to be applied to a Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology program. This is the first year of the scholarship, so the sponsors are learning from the experience. As the "rules" are now written, there is no requirement that the ASME member and the student be from the same team, but both must participate in FIRST. With the "global link" of FIRST (in part demonstrated by the connections teams form at the competitions and via the net) and the emphasis of alliances, one could present the case (in their application) that the simple requirement that both member and student be associated with FIRST achieves the goals of the scholarship. The key component in the student/member relationship will be the member’s nomination letter concerning the student’s technical, creative and leadership contributions to the FIRST team.
