We had a similar problem with ours. I believe it was a software issue. Unfortunitly I cant remember what I had to do to fix it.

You can verify the accelerometer is working by using a voltmeter. With the accelerometer hooked up, measure the voltage between the signal pin and ground. Be careful not to short anything out. If you measure something around 1.5V (+/-0.3V) then it is working.
