It is always such a hassle and stressful trying not to scratch or damage them after getting them at competitions.
We keep all of the boxes of duplicates that we have ordered in the past (to give to mentors and donors) for transporting purposes.
I think we had discussed that among our hours of preparation as a passing conversation. I'm not sure if that conversation was flowed up "through the chain of command" so to speak, but I know (in Atlanta at least) we unpacked all the boxes, & then they were all thrown out by Thursday afternoon - we did all the prep work for the awards in one of the empty locker rooms & all those (cardboard) boxes got in our own way after a while.)

To improve the team's ability to transport as you mentioned & also to reduce some waste (for the time being - at least on site of an event) that would be a good idea to give the teams the boxes, but also one more thing to have volunteers assigned to take care of at an event.

I'm sure this can be brought up in the FIRST Forums as an official suggestion, or to your event coordinator for regional events to look at a possibility of implementing in the future.

The FIRST Forms have an Awards section to post questions or comments on, so I would say go for it & propose the idea & if you want, & also include some of the "inside info" I have shared here with your suggestion if you would like to.
