Rules say your robot must be able to get off the field without having to be powered up.

We required a tether after one match in order to get our hook to let go of the goal. Refs told us to fix it before the next match, or not play again. Our hook is powered by the seat track motor. Since then we take a cordless drill to open up the hook (on the flex shaft). Ref's have no problem with that.

If your using the tether outside of the playing field, there should be no problem.
