Wow! Wired screwed up. I have no idea what this 'Waterfill contest' is, but I've never heard of it before. It certainly isn't FIRST. Here is an excerpt from the article:
What you're watching is the FIRST Southern California Regional Robotics Competition on NASA TV.
The competition pits 49 robots against each other in a battle royale that will eventually send three robots to the national championships in Florida in early April.
The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) program is a competition designed to give high school students hands-on experience in robotics engineering.
....
This year's contest is called the Waterfill Contest. The goal of the competition is for each robot to find a way to move between 2 and 2.2 liters of water from a supply tank to a receptacle tank placed one meter away.
The contestants will be given five minutes to set up their robots, after which the only contact each team can have with its robot will be to initiate movement. No remote control mechanisms can be used and the robot can receive no assistance from a team member.
The three fastest robots to fill the receptacle tank, with the required amount of water, will be off to Florida for the national championships.
In order to accomplish the task, each team is assigned a mentor engineer from NASA who helps them come up with ideas for the design and construction of the robot and then helps them build the final model. This helps to achieve one of the goals of the project, which is to give students an idea of what it is like to actually work in the field.
...
The competition has become a nationwide event since it began 11 years ago under the guidance of Dean Kamen, inventor of the recent news-grabbing invention Ginger. This year, there will be 13 regional competitions -- four take place this weekend -- which will involve 530 teams.
Hmm.....
