I think that a defense will play a big factor in the later regionals. One thing to keep in mind is that during qualifications matches (when a strong alliance might have an easier time running the score up), teams are interested in increasing their ranking score and will score on their own alliance to improve their seeding position. Oddly this ends up hurting many of the other ranking and scouting statistics. The teams that thoroughly understand the strategy required for this game will not try to run up the score during qualifications.
Our strategy is to leave a 30-40 point lead (when we are lucky enough to get it) to prevent a last minute loss due to super cells. After that we will score on our own alliance.
During eliminations you want the margin to be double the opposing alliances score minus 1 to prevent empty cell penalty.
