Team 40's preferred strategy is to get right up next to a trailer and shoot into it in both auto and operator control. However, the turret is adjustable to shoot at a distance up to about five feet in situations where robots move away.
I have seen their auto mode move up against a trailer, being shooting, then shoot one or two off as the trailer moves away, stop shooting, and then move up against the trailer to score again.
Team 228 also attempts to score at a range of about one robot length (three feet or so). Their auto mode during qualification matches at CT was to drive forward from the outpost and shoot their starting seven balls over the opposing robot toward their trailer. While I have no hard numbers to back this up, they may have scored a handful to maybe 10 balls in trailers over the course of the event (I believe they were the only ones to score in auto during the regional).
