Re: 2009 Greater Toronto Regional

I will do what I can with the RAW B-roll that I have once I get it into my computer and off the XDCAM discs, I am trying to find away to reduce the file sizes as well but my brain over heated and I haven't had time to do anything last couple of days except work.

As for the stuff online, each TV station is different, some put stories online and keep them there for awhile and some do not, it's hit and miss and it shouldn't be that way, how many people get home at 6pm to watch the news these days? Tv stations had better put their best product on the internet because that's were the viewers are and will be in the future.

I am not FIRST alumni, my FIRST time covering a FIRST event was Aim High and I remember it very well and since I do front line hard news (scanners- BC996t, police, fire, ems, etc) and severe weather 90 percent of the time I am wound up like a spring 95 percent of the time and believe me I had no clue what this event was, some robotics competition they were sending me to and I was trying to figure out an excuse not to go and eventually I went down to the Hershy centre and figured I'll go in there for five minutes and get out of there.

So I get there and I ended up entering via the upper levels so I am in the stands and it's like this massive rock concert with robots on the field and the music was good.

I shot some video, then went down to the field and then the pits and paused to send a message on my blackberry to the station saying "this thing at the hershey centre is really big, send another camera and a reporter!!!"

They made me wear safety glasses, I told them that I'm ok, I'm media and of course I ended up getting used to shooting with safety glasses on and and then I realized that I would look out of place if I wasn't wearing them.

About an hour into it walking around the pits I noticed there are hundred of people there frantically working on robots, tools flying, parts dropping to the ground and yet I still haven't heard one swear word, I really noticed that. ( Can't say the same for me when I'm working on something)

So to make a long story not quite as long, I went back the next day, shot more video for our weekend news on my own because I thought this aim high game was really fun to watch and and I wanted to get more goals on tape, then I started learning about FIRST and came across this site and became addicted and now it's been the most favorite event/shoot I look forward to each year. Now that weekend when I went back for the second day of Aim High I remember it well, I shot 6 hours of tape and I rushed back to Global and at 5:15pm I went to the producer's desk and told him I have all the FIRST robotics stuff for the six and I had this stack of tapes in my hand and he says ok thanks mark, I have it in for 1minute 45 seconds so just give me you're best stuff......and I was holding 6 hours of video and interview clips in my hand and it was 5:15.

I try and follow FRC quite closely although this year with the long hours I didn't have as much reading time as I would have liked.

I have received some some great technical advice on this site on computer related matters and really experiencing a regional and seeing what goes on gives you something to think about in terms of you're own skills and work ethic.

It's a really good event, good news story and worth doing and the music is really good at the regional and where else would you have robots, technology, sports, high school and college students and adults all in one building dancing to the chicken dance? They even played a stompin Tom song this time around

that "active" Coach from 1075 is ME! and I'm dying to see the footage!! I'd be ever grateful if you could hook me up with anything you have! I was told the online news video had the 30 sec clip but it didn't.
I'm kind of shocked you are on the forums, are you FIRST Alum that happens to film for Global?

Thanks Mark![/quote]
