While Patrick is probably right about it being hard for freshmen to get on teams for other competitions, I would think seriously about taking part in something besides FIRST. As much as I love this program, college is a place to try new things. In many respect FIRST lives in an artificial world. The field is idealized and so are the tasks. Which is not to say they are easy, just that random elements are removed to a large extent.

In these other competitions you learn more about designing for uncertainty. This is important. There is also the chance to "try out" an industry and see if you like dealing with their kinds of problems.
