Having driven robots with joysticks, and with a modified RC car pistol controller, I don't like this idea.

I also think that having a standard DS, which costs less than a laptop, and can be replaced at the events, and repaired relatively easily, is probably not so bad after all. I'd hate to blow the one ethernet port on the team's laptop, and have to figure out how to fix it, or come up with $300 or so for a new laptop.
