Heh, I doubt anyone would openly announce that their team pirates 3D Studio MAX. Then again, I doubt many teams out there can say they made a quality animation without 24-hour access to several computers with 3D Studio MAX on them. On Wildstang, we were lucky enough to get a couple of student volunteers from an Art Institute to help us out. They were able to get us access to their computer lab, which had many computers with 3DS MAX on them. Without that access, we would never have been able to make our animation, since there is certainly no sizeable budget for software or computers on our team. Another way to do it might be to actively recruit students with their own powerful computers. Of course, you'd still need to get them copies of 3DS MAX somehow...
