What's the number one difference between FIRST and Battlebots? FIRST has lots of grass-roots support and Battlebots does not. You do not have hundreds of loyal participants in Battlebots who are willing to evangilize the program -- FIRST does. And in the end, that will be the difference between which program has a larger impact.
