"Jane" is trying to discredit "John's" opinion by discrediting him, regardless of if John is indeed a poopy head his opinion's validity does not change.
I also feel I must give credit to Karthik for this topic though. Once again, in my meandering of old threads I found a discussion that interested me. At one point he posted
