The install base of Flash is not insignificant, and was large enough to warrant taking the risk. In case Flash is not available, the site will offer a mobile version that contains the same content minus videos and high bandwidth media. Performance testing (mainly looking up the site on a junk computer) has yielded positive results with tolerable performance overhead.
Remember that optimizing performance and accessibility was one of the main goals. If I couldn't do that, I would never have touched Flash.
