Well, the issues is more likely having innovative and self sufficient engineers. The problem seems to be not so much having a demand (so many jobs are outsourced to places like india anyways where people who are college educated and perfectly competent work for as little as 30 thousand a year) because, especially as interest in renewable energy and the like grows, there will always be a need for engineers.
