Simple - the earth's rotation is based in part on the distance from the moon... something about the pull of gravity that both excert on each other. All you have to do is increase the distance between the earth and the moon, and the earth's rotation slows down. I forget the exact laws of physics responsible for this, but it's kinda like Venus, who's rotation is locked to it's moon, so it's always facing it's moon (Venus's
rotation period is something like 240 days, the same as its revolution period. Thats one hella long day ;-)
