I am usually a big fan of 6WD but I think this is the year of the 8WD robot.

Actually (believe it or not), I am designing up a 12WD robot this year -- with 8" pneumatic tires -- I can hardly wait to see this beast in action...

Sadly, the design is still under embargo so for now I will leave the arrangement of 12 8" wheels in a 38"X28" chassis as an exercise for the reader...
