no I did not install wind river on a usb drive, however I do have an installation of it on another partition.
The funny thing is, the problem just went away
(except more in an excited sort of way). If this problem goes away on it's own, that's a lot less disruptive, but if there's a solution to this problem (in case it arises again) I'd love to find out
