I also want to add when you do a direct connect use a CROSSOVER cable. They are almost exactly the same as an ethernet cable, but are usually colored Orange or Pink. If you still can't tell if a cable is crossover, look at the connectors on the end. The wires inside should be flip-flopped in color.
