People have different opinions, you cannot deny that, but I completely understand and agree with your statement. I mean, it is nice to win but that is not at all the main concern, in my point of view. It is all about the experience, and learning different things that can have an impact on technology later on in life.
This is my first year on the CAD team, coming from knowing nothing about Autodesk the year before, to feeling like I know so much. Actually looking back, I cannot believe how much I have learned in such a short period of time. When I work with Inventor, I feel like this is a skill that can help me later in life; I feel myself solving problems that could have meant severe results if not double-checked or if the problems were ignored.
As for helping people see what FIRST is truly about, I am not sure it is something that can be solved. It is difficult to tell someone who thinks they have the right idea that their idea is wrong. If I think of any ways that could help, I will get back to you (I will probably post again of this thread).
