If you're heading to RPI in the fall and feel like completely ignoring Ian's good advice, you can ask me questions too.
Between RPI teams 20 and 250, and non-RPI-but-still-awesome 2791, there's plenty of ways to get involved with a FIRST team if you so choose. Look at other stuff first though, unless you have a particular interest in mentoring.
