This is exactly what I was going to suggest. To expand a little further, this all boils down to the first part of your design discussion which is "What should the robot do." Emphasis here is what and not how... this is often times the hardest thing to overcome in a design discussion. As Chris pointed out, the what is "get the robot higher than the platform."
